October 2009 Update: Unscrupulous individuals and estate agents still continue to offer land and property in Orhaniye for sale to British citizens. This is illegal. BRITISH CITIZENS CANNOT BUY LAND OR PROPERTY IN ORHANIYE, EITHER AS INDIVIDUALS OR THROUGH A TURKISH COMPANY. For a first hand experience of how confidence tricksters stole several British couples’ life savings, please email Linsey Miller. She will explain the financial impact of believing such people and the subsequent battle to recover their money through the Turkish courts.

If you love horses, you should consider coming to Orhaniye off-season when the weather is better for longer horse treks. Now you can fly to Dalaman anytime all through the winter and in winter, you can ride the horses on the beach, which is a fantastic experience.

Here is a typical off-season one week riding holiday Felis is organising from mid September 2009 to Mid June 2010. For more details, please email Felis directly.

Day 1: Arrival, transfers, welcome and tour of stables if early enough.

Day 2: Grooming, preparing your horse, first check ride, first trail ride. After lunch, second trail ride starting at Orhaniye towards the ridge of hills with sceneric views on the Gulf of Hisaronu, ending in the village of Hisaronu¸then slowly following the village road back to the stables. Dinner before back to your accommodation.

Day 3: Grooming, preparing your horse, first longer trail ride, optional lesson, followed by tour to Marmaris.

Day 4: Day off to explore the peninsula. Lots of things to do and plenty of optional excursions!

Day 5: Full day trail ride. We will go over the hills to the original old village of Hisaronu, crossing this village and going on about 150 metre hills to the village of Kecibuku, where most of you will lodge. A short break for a coffee or tea at Sakin Vadi cottages. Then we climb once again hills of 200-250 metre height in direction of Osmaniye. Picnic lunch and then we go on from Osmaniye in western direction aiming for the restaurant of Asparan. There a camp will be made – tents, a barbecue and camp fire organized by the restaurant. For those who prefer to sleep in their bed we wil organize a transfer back to kecibuku. Everybody has to take care of his horse and we will finish the day by smelling and hearing the horses.

Day 6: From the Asparan we will start our trail ride after a wonderful Turkish breakfast. We will prepare the horses and get ready for a 4-5 hours ride ñ first fom Asparan along the foothills, crossing a river and the main road to Datca to Degirmenyani, back around easy riding terrain for hours heading slowly back to the stables, to complete a wonderful horse riding holiday.

“All of the comments in the guest book really say the same thing ‘there just aren’t enough superlatives’ to adequately describe the wonderful Villa Nurtan, so for something a bit different I thought I would make a few comments on the abundance of wildlife that can be seen around the villa, and especially up in the forests and mountains close by.

In the olive groves and trees around the villa there is an amazing variety of birds, not just swallows, swifts and sparrows. There are lots wagtails, tits, warblers, linnets, jays, woodpeckers and blackbirds, sometimes similar to the ones at home, but much more colourful. At night you can hear the owls. If you are quick you can spot lizards and if really lucky a chameleon, but often they run off before you see the them. There are squirrels (red and grey) fairly close, along with tortoises and tree frogs down in the gulley beyond the garden. The butterflies love the flowers in the garden, especially in late spring and early summer, lots of swallowtails and the elusive clouded yellow, very rare.

Away from the villa on the edge of the pine forests, about a thirty minute walk, a much greater variety of birds can be observed including the tiny and minute bee eater. You really need to get up early, find yourself a convenient tree to sit under, sit down, and after just a few minutes everything will start happening!

Further up into the mountains, about a 60 to 90 minute walk, are some most interesting creatures including wild boar, pine martins, porcupines and the elusive ‘racoon dog’. None of these creatures, plus a lot more, come down into the valley, so you need to get up early and walk up one of the tracks behind kekibuku (if you can tear yourself away from the luxury of the villa)to get a chance of observing the wildlife.

After coming to Orhaniye for 15 years, this year (and for the first time) I was so lucky to see a fully grown male wild boar, two piglets, and a golden eagle on three successive days, all within a 60 minute walk of Villa Nurtan. You can’t mistake the Golden Eagles, they are the biggest birds around. They nested this year in the valley at the back of Orhaniye village and have raised two chicks. The parents can often be seen soaring above the peaks quite close by.

If you plan on going up into the mountains: stick to the well marked tracks, wear stout shoes or boots, take some water and enjoy the glorious scenery and wildlife (but don’t blame me if you don’t see a golden eagle!)” Thanks to Mike Baxter
